BSIS Firearms Requals & Renewals
Keep your BSIS exposed firearms permit current and stay in compliance
Please use your FULL name when registering for the courses. We use our scheduling software to download and create the certificates after all courses. If you have a middle initial enter it as well to avoid duplicate entries. This is IMPORTANT to have your certificate complete. Do NOT use short versions of your name. Thank you.
Requalification / Renewal
This requalification is for current BSIS exposed firearms permit holders who need to renew their qualification. Book your requal online and receive a discount. Renewals should be turned in at least 90-60 days prior to expiration! Do not wait until the LAST 30 days or you risk losing your license!
Requals and Renewals are separate services. All renewals must be accompanied by 4 requals. They do not all need to be with 1 training entity, however, access to all 4 is required to submit a renewal.
What to Bring:
- Your current BSIS exposed firearms permit
- Your current security guard registration (Guard Card)
- A valid government-issued ID
- 100 rounds of ammunition per caliber you intend to qualify withWe do carry common calibers on site in limited quantities — please call ahead to confirm availability if needed.
- Your duty firearm and holster (rental equipment available if needed)
- At least 2 ten-round magazines for semi-auto shooters
- At least 1 speedloader for revolver shooters
- Eye and hearing protection (available first come, first served)
Renewal Timing & Frequency
Renewal applicants must complete a requal once every 4-6 months and submit a written exam. Submit your renewal paperwork to BSIS at least 90-60 days before your permit expires to avoid any lapse in your ability to work as an armed security officer.
Approved Qualification Calibers
Per BSIS regulations after 1 JAN 2024, students may only qualify with:
Renewals
Renewals must be submitted within 90 days PRIOR to the expiration date. In order to prevent gaps in your license we STRONGLY advise submitting your renewal within 90 - 60 days in order to account for possible delays. There is no "Grace Period" for carrying while waiting for your new license. Applicants must inform the instructor on the morning of that they are renewing.
BSIS renewals may be submitted by the applicant or by Southwest Training Center. If you would like to have us renew your license for you, choose from the add-on services below:

Range Location & Map
Lopez Canyon Shooting Range, Sylmar, CA
Directions and address will be provided upon booking a course. It is approximately 10 minutes' drive from our classrooms.
Important Notes:
- • When you are driving on the dirt keep speeds under 10mph.
- • For classes and qualifications, we will be on the lower ranges. As soon as you cross the wooden bridge, we are immediately to the right on the first driveway.
- • You may bring your equipment to the bay, do not uncase until instructed to do so. Firearms may not be hand carried from the car.
- • Do not load magazines until instructed to do so.
Facilities Available:
- • Private range, there is no access for public shooters.
- • Women's and Men's restrooms available.
- • Shade and seated areas.
- • Wheelchair ramp ADA accessible.
- • There are no ammunition vendors on site. All rental or range equipment must be requested ahead of time. Eye protection and hearing protection first come, first served.
