Commonly Asked Questions

What is the Virtual Non-Resident CCW course?

This is an online, instructor-led version of our California CCW initial training course. It is designed for applicants from agencies that have approved the use of online training, such as non-CA residents. The virtual course covers all classroom requirements for the California CCW permit.

Does this course satisfy the California CCW training requirement?

Yes, the virtual classroom portion fulfills the classroom training requirement for the California CCW initial permit. However, the range qualification portion must still be completed in person. Contact your issuing agency to confirm they accept virtual classroom training.

Can I attend the training BEFORE submitting my application?

We do not recommend this. Contact your issuing agency before booking a class. You should submit an initial CCW application and pay the application fee to your agency prior to booking the course. Every agency has a different policy regarding when they want you to seek training.

How do I apply for a California CCW?

Applicants can apply with any county they choose. Southwest Training Center serves all of LA COUNTY and we recommend Los Angeles Sheriff's Department or LAPD as the starting point. You must fill out the online application first and be approved before taking our class. The firearms listed on your permit must be owned by you. Here are the links.

What do I need for the virtual session?

You will need a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a working webcam and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space where you can participate without distractions. A notepad for taking notes is also recommended.

Do I still need to complete range training?

Yes. The range qualification is a mandatory component of the CCW certification and must be completed in person. After completing the virtual classroom portion, you will need to schedule and attend a separate range qualification session with a local instructor of your choice. Any instructor who is qualified may witness and administer your qual. Qualified instructors must be:
  • NRA personal protection outside the home instructors
  • NRA Law Enforcement instructors
  • A P.O.S.T. handgun instructor (or its equivalent in your state)
  • A California B.S.I.S. firearms instructor
  • A California DOJ certified CCW instructor
Please note you will need a copy of their instructor certificate as part of the process. Call ahead and we can assist you in understanding what local instructors will meet that requirement.

Is SB2 still enforceable?

Yes, SB2 is still in effect although portions have been deemed unenforceable. Some sensitive locations such as airports, schools, police stations are still enforceable. Please research the bill's latest updates. To read the last update by the Office of the Attorney General's office, click here
