Important Renewal Tips

  • The "90-Day" Rule: Submit your CCW renewal within 90 days before your expiration date. Apply as early as possible in that window to avoid delays. If your permit expires before renewal is completed, you cannot carry, and you may be required to apply as a new applicant. Agencies are not required to remind you that your expiration date is approaching.
  • SB 2 Training Requirements: Even for renewals, you must provide proof of an 8-hour safety course from an authorized provider. Note that many agencies maintain their own specific lists of "Authorized Training Providers" that may differ slightly from the LASD list.
  • Live Scan: Some agencies require a new Live Scan for every renewal, while others only require it if your information has changed or if it has been several years. Check the specific instructions on the portal before heading to a Live Scan location.

Standard Renewal Requirements (SB 2 Compliant)

Regardless of the city, the renewal process in California generally follows these strict mandates:

  1. 1
Refresher Course: You must complete an 8-hour CCW renewal training course from an authorized provider. Students will meet at our classrooms to do educational training and then go to the range after for the range qualifications.
  2. 2
Range Qualification: You must qualify with every firearm you intend to list on your permit.
  3. 3
Application Timing: Most agencies recommend starting the renewal 90 days before your current permit expires.
  4. 4
Proof of Residency: You must still live within your issuing agency's jurisdiction to renew your CCW. If you've moved outside that area, you may not be eligible to renew and may need to apply with your new local agency. Apply as soon as possible after moving to avoid a lapse. If your CCW was issued by LASD, you can continue renewing with them as long as you still live in Los Angeles County. If you moved from Glendale to Santa Monica, your GPD CCW will not be renewed and you will need to start over with SMPD.
  5. 5
Fees: Pay renewal application fees, these fees vary from agency to agency.
  6. 6
No Grace Period: If your permit expires before it is completed you may not carry in public until you have your new permit in hand.

Commonly Asked Questions

What agencies accept your training course?

We are approved for all agencies and cities within Los Angeles County, California, such as LAPD, Glendale, Burbank, Lancaster, Santa Clarita, Santa Monica, El Segundo etc. Even if we are not directly listed on your agencies training roster, we are approved on the County List and all instructors are DOJ CCW certified instructors.

Can I attend the training BEFORE submitting my renewal application?

We do not recommend this. Contact your issuing agency before booking a class. Every agency has a different policy regarding when they want you to seek training.

How do I renew?

Log into the online portal for your issuing agency and submit a renewal application. Use the renewal links table above to find your agency's portal.

Do I need a just cause?

No, you do not. All that is required is for you to be a lawful non-prohibited person.

Can I use a firearm that was inherited?

Yes, any handgun, pistol, or revolver registered in your name can be used.

Can I use my spouse's firearm?

No... unfortunately for the purpose of CCW the law was changed to require a firearm be registered in your name for license issuance.

I have a DUI in my criminal history, can this prohibit me from CCW?

Potentially. Any criminal history can be used to determine good or bad character for the purpose of CCW. Every agency makes different determinations and takes into account recency, severity, and frequency of the cases prior to making a determination. Our advice is do not lie, misrepresent, or omit any criminal history — and still apply, as long as you are not a prohibited person such as a convicted felon etc.

What can I do if the firearm is legally mine, but does not exist on the AFS system under my name?

You'll need to file a report with the California Department of Justice through their online system. Go to the CFARS (California Firearms Application Reporting System) and choose "Firearm Ownership Report".Click here to access CFARS

Is SB2 still enforceable?
