Important Renewal Tips
- The "90-Day" Rule: Submit your CCW renewal within 90 days before your expiration date. Apply as early as possible in that window to avoid delays.
- SB 2 Training Requirements: Even for renewals, you must provide proof of an 8-hour safety course from an authorized provider.
- NEW FINGERPRINT REQUIREMENT FOR CCW RENEWALS Under California Penal Code § 26185, CCW renewal applications submitted to the California Department of Justice on or after September 1, 2026 require new fingerprints for a fingerprint-based firearms eligibility check. Follow the instructions of your issuing agency regarding when and how to complete your Live Scan.

- 5Fees: Pay renewal application fees — these vary by agency.
- 6No Grace Period: If your permit expires before renewal is completed, you may not carry until your new permit is in hand.

What agencies accept your training course?
We are approved for all agencies and cities within Los Angeles County. All instructors are DOJ CCW certified instructors.
Can I attend the training BEFORE submitting my renewal application?
We do not recommend this. Contact your issuing agency before booking a class. Every agency has a different policy regarding when they want you to seek training.
How do I renew?
Log into the online portal for your issuing agency and submit a renewal application. Use the Select Your Issuing Agency section above to find your agency's portal.
Is SB2 still enforceable?
SB2 is still in effect although portions have been deemed unenforceable. Please research the bill's latest updates. To read the last update by the Office of the Attorney General's office, click here.
How early should I start my CCW renewal?
We recommend starting your renewal process approximately 90 days before your CCW expiration date. Many Los Angeles County issuing agencies use the 90-day period before expiration as the renewal window. Starting early gives you time to complete the required 8-hour renewal training, new fingerprint/Live Scan requirements, agency paperwork and any other requirements imposed by your issuing agency. Always check your issuing agency's current instructions before beginning the renewal process.
Can I renew my CCW after it expires?
Do not wait until your CCW expires. Under California Penal Code § 26225(e), if a license holder fails to submit a renewal application within 90 days after the license expires, the licensing authority must request termination of the applicable DOJ subsequent-notification status. Some issuing agencies, including LAPD, state that a renewal cannot be processed after this 90-day period and the applicant must restart as a new initial applicant. Agency procedures can vary, so review your issuing agency's current requirements immediately if your permit has expired.
Can I still carry with my CCW after it expires while my renewal is being processed?
No. Do not treat the renewal-processing period as an extension or grace period for carrying. Once your CCW reaches its expiration date, the expired license does not authorize continued concealed carry while you wait for the renewal to be completed. Submit your renewal early and follow your issuing agency's instructions to minimize the possibility of a lapse between licenses.
IMPORTANT: The 90-day period after expiration should not be interpreted as a 90-day extension of your CCW. Your issuing agency controls the renewal process. Select your agency above for current renewal instructions.
